dome assemble part 1.... (11/10/2010)

finally, i can online.... time to update my blog..

now, its the real assemble.... last monday, we're asked to gather at the place that we practiced our merdeka parade.

here's the pictures i've taken....

section 2

waiting for instructions...

arrange the strut according to group

up u go...

making the mark with blue spray..

screw it up...

its huge...

waiting for the next instruction.

unfortunately... it crumble down... reason: according to mr. wan b, dome struts depend on every other strut to stand. however, when one section is not completely done, it affects the rest.

we're also asked to re-do all the strut that are no longer strong to hold the structure.. mine too, it cracked.. @@

9A:: Abstract

we're told to get into a group of 5 per major. we need to write a 300 words abstract on the subtopic given according to major. mine was "Spread Factual Info To The World"

all of our abstract was based on the concept of Awakening as One and the issue concern is 'we're still fast asleep in the box' which means we still not aware of what is happening around us. we need to change and be more alert on our surrounding, especially towards out mother earth.

what can be QS do? this is the outcome of our discussions:

"Quantity Surveyors are the professionals working in the construction industries concerning the cost of projects. They estimate the project cost by analyzing the architects and engineers designs to make sure the project does not over budgeted. They advised architects and engineers on the cost implications of their design.

As far as what we know, some building materials are expensive and this further increases the product price. As a customer, we’ll not be happy when the price of a house is expensive. So, in order to prevent this from happening, we can reduce the cost of production.

This can be done by replace the construction material with bamboo. Bamboos are cheap as it can be obtain in large amount. It’s sustainable and is a strong building material. It required low maintenance because it’s very durable. Bamboo can be use for building the component of the house like the door. The most suitable bamboo is bamboo from India as it grows individually which make harvesting a lot easier.

Quantity surveyor need to be strict in choosing the materials. In Japan, they used papers to build temporary school buildings for the earthquake victims. Quantity surveyor has the responsibility to know all this low cost materials and let everyone especially the architects and engineers to know it. They must know about this so that they can design their building with lower cost and sustainable.

How it can be done? Conferences and talks throughout the world can spread the knowledge. For example, the Bamboo Interest Group. RISC is also one of the organisation that can spread all this latest info. Quantity Surveyors are not just namely cutting the cost of the project but we must be aware of the nature as well. We need to have knowledge to enable us to provide better future to the human being."

mindshift is something that cannot be done in few days or few weeks time. its a long term process where only the owner that is ourselves can do it. other people can only inspire them. everyone have his/her own role towards the earth. we must be clear that only we can make the difference and if we didn't no 1 else will do so.

The Apex Leap to 2012

today all the RUS 101 students are going to attend the BIG's talk on the Apex Leap to 2012. I'm really interested to know more about BIG.

Mr. Wan begun his talk with a little introduction about BIG and the Apex Leap... also the role and advantages of bamboo. Bamboo play a big part in this program... one of the reason is it satisfy the 7 APEX points. Bamboo is :

1. The future strongest building material and eco-friendly
2. Amazing and unique features
3. Most sustainable resource
4. Reduce poverty world wide
5. Survived the atomic blast and became the first re-greening
6. Able to reverse the effect of global warming

Point 7 - commitment.... what can we do?

What can we do to come out with something that able to meet the above 6 points by using bamboo? Mr. Wan emphasized a lot on the 21st Dec 2012. What will happen on that day, we'll never know. "its better to be knowledgeable than to be left out in the dark" this quote was taken from the website http://www.hbp.usm.my/1b/buluh/about2012.htm . It means that its better to be prepared than sitting down doing nothing.

one of the easiest example will be the dome that we RUS 101 student that just working on. each and everyone plays his or her part to make 1/2 struts. although it looks nothing but when gather everything and construct it, it can make a 2 storey high dome. This dome, we called it IBU will be the survival dome that accommodate all of us when disaster struck. without working together as one, its impossible to get works done.

then, we have another just finish tested project by RAG 132 - a floating dome. we're divided in groups of 3 and we are to construct floating dome that can accommodate all members. the dome must be made of bamboo.

during the process of completing both projects, we faced lots of problem. here, i've learned that bamboo is not just a plant. it have lots of uses. i also learned that, without cooperation, we cant get things done. for example, during the real test of our floating dome, we're asked to stand up and switched position. we need to work together as a team or else, the dome will loss its balance.

its the same as preparing for the 2012. we need to get together as one. we need to change the mindset of people. well, maybe not change the thinking but we can inspire them. many people said that the big dome that we're currently working on will not be successful but i believe that if everyone play their parts, that thing gonna work and it can be use during the 2012 disaster. i heard many complaints and seen how people work. some just simply do as long as its done and it turned out that when we try to assemble it in small groups, the connector comes out, the strut not stable, etc.

we need to change now.. stop complaining and start to act. if everyone acts like how we act now, we're not gonna survive. Let say the disaster is not gonna happen, however, this act of changing will benefit us in terms of being a someone in this community. we are the Awaken One.

What i've learned today was its not just being you but sometimes, when the time comes, we need to change our thinking, our mindset. be open to receives the change and be ready when it comes. be unite and nothing can stop us if we do so. nothing is impossible if we speak as one and act as one. Be prepare for the worse and prepare for the future.... "sediakan payung sebelum hujan"

Are you all ready for it???

p/s: my question: How can bamboo contribute in the medical field in the future/during 2012?
ans: Lots of uses, one of it is treat Epilepsy. Want to know more, get in the medical school
and do research on it..... =.=

Ibu constructions...(101 domesday)

the whole class gonna build a big dome... so each of us will make the structure (strut). i was in section 2, group 2 (or B), my struts are 2.284meter long and i need to have 2 strut. so here's the process.

24th september

taken from http://www.hbp.usm.my/1b/101/domesday.htm

taken from http://www.hbp.usm.my/1b/101/domesday.htm

telling the guard we want to take the bamboo at rumpun buluh

the site..

measuring the length

some picking the correct bamboo...

making the line for reference..

using saw to cut...

27th september

the saw

kikir thingy... i dont know what it is called but its for trimming the connector

pen knife..., parang and kikir

for slicing the bamboo

measuring the correct length (118mm)

making the line...

using kikir and pahat to slice the bamboo into smaller size..

this is how it looks like

the part that are too thin, i used a stopper bamboo to make the structure stronger..

28th september

2nd badge tube arrived

making the mark...

cutting it...we need to cut 6

give to the X man to cut it into one piece

marking the line....

cutting it.... for reference when using machine to make the shape..

using machine to cut

29th september

trimming the connector

burn the connector...

flatten the connector...

30th september

fit in the connector to both side of the bamboo.. this part was a bit loose. so i use small pieces of bamboo to strengthen the grip.

connector with the bamboo

writting down my name...

the mess that we made..

1st october - assemble...

all section 2 assemble...

screw and nuts

phew.... after bringing all the bamboo the assigned place..

connect the bamboo with screw..

section 2 x man giving instructions...

discussing what to do next... as we dont have enough space..

writting down the parts. we have part A to E

fixing the other struts that are still lose... we differentiate all the struts according to groups.

re-enforcing...

re-enforcing....

part of our dome..

the dome...

before we dismissed...
